Environment: LPC coal clean-up boosts environmental protection

Thanks to the efforts of its staff and contractors, LPC has made significant progress in reducing the impact of coal operations on the harbour and the stormwater network.

After each coal loadout, the teams sweep up as much coal as possible to prevent it from entering the water or creating dust. They also work together to maintain the equipment and minimise spillage.

One of the significant improvements was enclosing the bottom of the ship loader, the conveyor that transfers coal from the wharf to the ship. This prevents coal from falling directly into the harbour and reduces the risk of contamination.

Coal Operations Supervisor Darrin Rhodes said the staff has become more aware of and proud of the coal clean-up, and they understand the importance and benefits of protecting Whakaraupō.

“Everyone is into it and proud,” he said. “We are committed to doing our part to keep the harbour clean and healthy.”
