Customer Focus: State-of-the-art locomotives arrive at the Port

KiwiRail has taken a significant step forward in modernising New Zealand’s rail freight transport with the arrival of the first two of its new Stadler locomotives from Spain.

These state-of-the-art DM Class locomotives, which meet EU emissions standards, are part of a major initiative funded by a government investment to replace the aging DX freight fleet and enhance freight transport reliability across the country.

The new locomotives, each weighing 108 tons, are expected to considerably improve the nation’s rail infrastructure.

Simon Munt, Chief Customer and Supply Chain Officer, says that this event marked perhaps the first in his time here, where locomotives have been offloaded at the port.

This investment is beneficial not only for KiwiRail but also for Lyttleton Port Company’s broader aspirations for the growth of MidlandPort.

“It’s far more sustainable to put it on rail rather than road, and as we look to aggregate the South Island and bring cargo from Marlborough to Timaru, this investment is really important.”

The arrival of these locomotives is just the beginning, with a second consignment expected early in the New Year.

With 55 more Stadler locomotives to arrive, KiwiRail will significantly enhance its freight capabilities.
