Development: Safety: A look into the Dry Dock upgrade

LPC is undertaking a significant upgrade of the Dry Dock to improve the safety of dock users and ship crew. The project will involve installing new systems to prevent falls from height, such as safety lines and compliant stairs. The upgrade will also minimise the impact on the heritage asset by using ground anchors to support safety systems.

Some of the top surface is being restored to prevent seepage during the ground anchoring as grout travel and could come through cracks. This measure is conserving the heritage asset and preventing accidental damage.

Earthquake damage repair work is taking place to reinforce the broken edging. To facilitate repairs to the outer edge, temporary frames were installed to fix formwork. Due to the quick turnaround required for each step, more people are needed to help pour concrete and remove the formwork.

Ground anchoring is underway and the team are taking a three phased approach. First, circular holes are drilled which help to locate the anchors, with depths ranging from 100 to 400. The narrower, 400-deep holes guide the placement of the anchors 3 metres deep into the ground at the right angle. The final stage is to install headplates which the fall protection and stairs system attach to.
