Environment: Volunteers help native lizards at quarry site

Did you know that rare and endangered skinks and geckos live in the rocks above the Gollans Bay Quarry? They have a special place in our natural heritage and need our help to survive.

That’s why LPC has teamed up with the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust (BPCT) to protect the land where these lizards live. They have a covenant that ensures the site is free of plant and animal pests threatening the lizard habitat.

Last week, a group of volunteers from LPC and BPCT spent a day at the quarry site, pulling out bags of a nasty weed called “pigs’ ear”. This plant grows in the cracks of the rocks, taking up space and resources that the lizards need. The volunteers have made a big difference in the lizard population by removing the weeds.

Please read here if you are interested in learning more about the quarry covenant or joining the next volunteer event.
